Why do fats leave a clear residue when coming in contact with paper?

it's from the oils or even grease from the product coming off onto the paper.Why do fats leave a clear residue when coming in contact with paper?
It fills in the small spaces between the fibers. It's hard to explain, but it leads to a more direct path for the light so it isn't bouncing around as much.
